What is vacuum glass?

Vacuum glass is a double glazing of two glass sheets of at least 3 mm each - one of which is coated with a super-insulating coating - separated by a vacuum of 0.1 mm. Because of this vacuum space, very little heat conduction takes place between the glass sheets. The glazing is thus as much as four times thinner than a triple glazing, and weighs a third less for the same size.

Ideal for monumental buildings

The low U-value (insulation value), low thickness and low weight make vacuum glass ideally suited for installation in existing (monumental) window frames. In addition, we can supply the glass with the authentic look that suits your building.

• Before 1920: Monumental. Other techniques were previously used so the glass contained pull marks. This created a reflection/distortion.
• 1920 - 1960: Classic. By this period, production methods had improved, resulting in less reflection/distortion.
• Post 1960: Modern. This glass is flat and has a hard reflection. This looks great with the more modern sleek architecture.

Also suitable for new construction

Thanks to its low thickness combined with extreme insulation values, vacuum glass is also excellent for new construction projects. Vacuum glass makes it possible to create windows with a very low thickness, providing a spectacular appearance.

How much does vacuum glass cost?

Vacuum glass is a premium product, therefore the price is higher than traditional insulating glass. On average, the price starts from €245.00 excluding VAT per square meter. However, the higher price of vacuum glass is offset by its longevity and 15-year warranty. In addition, the insulation value does not decrease over time, unlike traditional insulation glass.

AA Glass is expert in fitting vacuum glass

Mounting ultra thin vacuum glass in existing (monumental) window frames is a specialized job. We do this in three steps:

1. The existing glass with putty is carefully removed from the existing rebates. To best extend the life of the existing frames, the rebates are painted with special durable primer.
2. The vacuum glass is glued hermetically into the rebate. This seals the window completely all around. We use specially tested glue and sealant types for this purpose to ensure that the sealants do not affect the black sealant edges of the vacuum glass.
3. The exterior is neatly finished with a putty substitute. The look is the same as traditional putty, but this modern variety can withstand heat and cold much better. Thus, the putty will not crack, ensuring a longer life for your windows and frames.
